Crazy Crotchets & Quirky Quavers!

Crazy Crotchets & Quirky Quavers!

Composer: Richard Smith

Part of the Eye For Ideas Series.

How do you make a duet different? How can piano teachers give their students a treat, a musical experience with an appealing twist? This book answers these questions. Each duet takes an unexpected turn that makes it as much fun to play as it is for the audience to watch. For example... In The Standing Up, Reaching Over, Sitting Down Waltz the parts deliberately cross so that the players apparently get in each other’s way and on each other’s nerves! Why are some pieces called rags? Key Cleaning Rag attempts an unlikely explanation. A rag is placed at either side of the piano keyboard and players take turns to dust up and down the keyboard during the performance. For the Love of Two Oranges gives each player the chance to demonstrate a good hand and wrist position playing part of the piece holding an orange (or tennis ball). The performers swap places In Split Ends and later resume their original seats.....yet the music never stops! Clear instructions are included to maximise the effect of each performance. There are six duets in total, deliberately ranged in challenge; three are for beginners to Grade One, two are at Grade Two and one at Grade Three.

Reviews

This is such fun and an absolute delight to the audience ... a real find.

Professional Piano Magazine

There’s no doubting that Smith’s deliciously daft sense of humour will be infectious, and that players and audiences alike will warm to these stimulating performance pieces.
In common with Smith’s other music books in the “eye for ideas” series, Crazy Crotchets and Quirky Quavers benefits from an in-depth instructional introduction explaining exactly how each piece works, while also giving superb advice about duet playing in general.
The book itself is clearly and professionally presented, with clean music engraving that presents Primo and Secondo on facing pages, and complete with useful fingering suggestions. In short, this is a terrific publication!
