"Pas de Deux" was written for Flute and Organ, commissioned by Patrick Williams, and first performed by him in Canterbury Cathedral in 2001. The piece is really a Concertino, and exists now in three versions—the original with organ, Flute and Piano, and Flute and Chamber Orchestra. It was designed firstly to utilise the many different acoustical beauties of the Cathedral—Patrick moved around the building for each of the four sections—and secondly to show the way that the flute's natural lyricism and brilliance could “dance” in the blaze of the huge colour and dynamic palette of the grand organ. It is a piece that encompasses extreme dramatic gesture, silence, and tender nuance, incorporating along the way a little jazz harmony, spirit and ambience. At first it appears that the work is a “competition” between the flute soloist and accompaniment, but a real “Pas de Deux” of course requires two differing protagonists to come to a proper understanding of their strengths and differences in order to achieve a creative accord that is something more than the sum of their parts.
