Jazz Paraphrase for Clarinet
Composer: Jeffery Wilson
Catalogue no: CM277 | ISMN M-57034-277-8
Jazz Paraphrase is a set of engaging pieces/studies which emulate the styles of various famous jazz players.
Clarinet
Lots of Dodds
Noted for his blues influenced improvisations and Clarinet virtuosity this self taught musician was an important contributor to the early jazz movement alongside Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton.
I Hear Ya George
George Lewis possessed a rich lower register and strident upper register on the Clarinet which he used to great effect in his improvisations that influenced a generation of British ‘trad’ players.
Go Sid
The talent that was Sidney Bechet is one of the most influential names in the early jazz movement. In this paraphrase we try to capture some of his idiomatic and seemingly ‘composed’ improvised ideas.
Let’s Hear it Woody
The popular band leader Woody Herman was no slouch when it came to playing the Clarinet. His improvisations are notable for the motivic rhythmic drive that characterises so much swing music.
Artie for Sure
Something of an innovator, Artie Shaw flirted with some classical and latin american ‘crossover’ music in his creative output. Here we explore something of the ‘straight 8’s’ feel and florid lines of this famous player.
Salt Peanuts
The rhythmic/melodic hook ‘salt peanuts’ is most associated with the Bebop movement of the 1940’s and so here we cast the clarinet in the role of a witty soloist with some recognisable quotes?
The Franco
One of the few Bebop Clarinet players Buddy de Franco did not limit himself to this style but over the course of a long career has lent his considerable technique to many areas of jazz music. Here we investigate some of his finger twisting lines.
A Good Man
No book on Jazz Clarinet would be complete without reference to the swing master Benny Goodman. Here we enjoy some of his typical arpeggiated figures and weaving scale patterns.
Yo Eddie
Eddie Daniels is a true master of the instrument and has assimilated many styles into his playing whilst offering a distinctive sound and fluent improvised lines which in this paraphrase we attempt to emulate.
This is included on the following exam syllabuses:
