Tommy Smith's Sonata (subtitled Hall of Mirrors) for tenor saxophone and piano is a substantial four movement work. Movement 1 (Mirror Talk) is a ruminative introduction incorporating broad sweeping tenor lines with bitonal harmonic drive, a feature throughout the work. "The Looking Glass" is a technical tour de force at speed, followed by "There is a mirror only we can see", again requiring dexterity, this time within a slower pulse which needs sensitive phrasing for definition. The short finale, "Hologram", is a using material from the second movement. The sonata is long, but it is a pleasure to welcome another substantial work to the gradually growing tenor repertoire. And another genuine 'crossover' piece, this time where the thematic development is based on classical techniques, whilst much of the harmony comes from polytonal jazz developments.
