Soprano Saxophone & Piano
Gentle Dreams, as its title suggests, is a slow piece and relies on understated melody and fresh but uncluttered harmony. Shiraz is an effective contrast, with long sustained lines against a driving rhythm which are themselves the broken up by rapid figuration. Heath's work converts well to the saxophone, offering opportunities for tonal inflections which are rare elsewhere. Eric Sweeney's Duo also relies on driving rhythms for its impetus, with both soprano and piano in rhythmic unison and exploring cross-rhythms. Not unlike a moto perpetuo in its overall concept, this is an exciting work, difficult in its fast tonguing requirements but by no means impossible.
