Flute and Piano
Attractively approachable music from a young composer with an eclectic voice.
Philip Gates is of a promising new generation of composers who are trying to communicate directly with the ordinary music lover, and aren't ashamed of tunes and sonata form. He obviously has a special feeling for the flute, and his sonata catches the instrument's chimerical range of mood expertly, and finds an elegant affinity with 20th-century French writing for this instrument, including the subtle jazzy undertones. The engagingly cool melancholy of the central movement has a few quirky interruptions from the piano, for which Gates also writes felicitously: not too many notes for a true partnership! The finale's rhythms are sparklingly Latin American.
