Sonata For Clarinet & Piano

Clarinet & Piano
For sheer good fun, try Philip Gates' Sonata. In the first movement, the pleasantly rambling, noodling solo line is underpinned by cocktail-piano chord structures. Triplet crotchet figure prominently, especially in the "languido" section. Yet for all the rich jazz harmony, the 1st movement ends abruptly in G minor. The second movement has a smoky, 3am feel, with a solo line so vocal you can almost hear words. Gates fills out the texture towards the middle with some very nice imitative writing. The final movement leaps out with a high-spirited Latin-American flavour. It is quite tough, but getting round the nasty fingering is rewarding.
