Three Jazz Studies
Composer: Jeffery Wilson
Catalogue no: CM098 | ISMN M-57034-098-9
Solo clarinet
These three studies are comprised of eighth-note lines (phrases), broken up by some triplet figures. The lines in the first two pieces outline blues-type progressions constructed with scale passages and arpeggios. These lines are occasionally broken up by leaps of a sixth–a common technique players would use to shift the direction of their phrase from ascending to descending or descending to ascending. The third piece has an uncharacteristic 34 bar form, but is reminiscent of a "rhythm-changes" (common set of chord changes based on George Gershwin's I Got Rhythm). The three pieces are all in a comfortable range for the clarinet, spanning from a low E to a C, two ledger lines above the staff. Wilson's pieces offer the player practice in syncopation and learning to swing through clearly marked articulation. The lines tend to go on without much of a break for a breath, but, they are very instructive; and for the clearly marked articulation and dynamics alone, they are worthy of study. The first piece is medium tempo, the second piece, a slow tempo, and the third piece, a fast tempo. The collection comes with a clarinet part and a separate chord-symbol sheet, containing chord symbols and no musical notation. As there are numerous accidentals, syncopations and interval leaps, these pieces might suit an advanced high school or early college age student.
