Clacton-on-Sea was built in the mid-nineteenth century on a wave of Victorian wealth and aspiration. A subsequent lack of imagination and investment has led it into a state of economic and social decline not unlike that of the country of which it is part.
The title of this piece is borrowed from a sign that hangs outside a holiday village on the approach road to Clacton and seems to represent a smiling optimism in the face of all odds. It was initially suggested by David Clewlow, the trumpeter of the ensemble Sounds Positive who gave the first performance on October 7th 1993 at St John's Smith Square, London.
There are ten movements grouped into three sections. Some of them are for family and canons occur not infrequently.
