Dennis Clarke - Pan magazine
John Frith began his musical studies as a clarinettist. He took up the French horn whilst studying at Dartington College and then studied horn and composition at the GSMD. As well as a composer, he is also a freelance player and teacher. The "Three Sketches" were written for Frith's own quintet, the Malvern Wind Quintet, and are marked Moderato, Molto tranquillo and Leggiero. Frith describes the quintet as pastoral and English in character. The style is quite unique however, and the blend of instruments exceptionally skilled.
The two outer movements are dance-like in character, with melodies and accompanying motifs passed between the instruments. This is done very thoughtfully, exploiting the contrasting timbres of the instruments. In contrast, the second movement is more reflective. The tranquil beginning becomes a busy ostinato in flute and clarinet, forming a backdrop for the extended melody in oboe and bassoon. After a bassoon cadenza, the melody is carried by the horn within the full sonority of the ensemble. The music is vivid and beautiful and seems to flow quite naturally of its own accord.
There are solo sections for all instruments with some wonderful moments for the horn. The piece is not too technically demanding but great care must be taken over balance and ensemble, especially in the second movement. This is a wonderful addition the wind quintet repertoire.
