Mr Midshipman Bassoonblower
Composer: Andrew Skirrow
Part of the The Crooks Anonymous Bassoon Quartet Series.
Catalogue no: CM009 | ISMN M-57034-009-5
A drunken romp through variations on "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor", each movement in the style of a different national drink. Great fun!
3 Bassoons and Contra Bassoon
1. Introduction (1' 00")
The Introduction wraps the theme "What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor" inside the Sailor's Hornpipe to set the nautical mood for the work.
2. Rum (1' 48")
A relaxed feel to this variation taking influence from South American dance rhythms.
3. Bourbon (1' 26")
A laid back and "smokey" feel with a nod to East Coast jazz.
4. Napolean Brandy (2' 38")
An intoxicated view of Napoleon Bonaparte with a slightly unsteady military feel, and somehow the song "Boney Was A Warrior" has crept into the mix!
5. Vodka (2' 10")
The final variation is a wild Russian dance with a wailing solo reminiscent of the Sabre Dance, and a final "Hoi!" to finish.
With five movements entitled 'Introduction', 'Rum', 'Bourbon', 'Napoleon Brandy' and 'Vodka' the flavour of this cocktail needs little elaboration other than to say that it is a fine, well balanced and mature blend which stimulates the palate and leaves the partaker refreshed if a little unsteady. Warning: attempt in public only when strictly sober!
